April 5, 2007 Meeting Minutes
Meeting Attendees
Attendees: Craig Anderson, Bill Dale, Mustafa Hussain, Heather Stearn, Dave ?, Daniel ? (sorry, I keep missing names)
Old Business
Status of Joint Venture: Silicon Valley, Emergency Managers Association
The presentation of the Joint Venture: Silicon Valley (JV:SV) group to the Santa Clara County Emergency Managers Association (SCCEMA) went very well.
eCLIC, Stanford, SLAC, and Palo Alto partnership
The eCLIC group is talking to Stanford, SLAC, and the city of Palo Alto to try to set up a trial network.
SBay.Org meeting and tour of possible Layer42/SVWUX Wi-Fi router site
We talked about the last SBay.Org board meeting held at Layer42 and about how we got a tour of the facility (very impressive!). SVWUX has the opportunity to put some gear on the roof of Layer42 and might be able to use some of the bandwidth available there.
San Jose EOC roof install
The San Jose EOC roof install needed to be postponed again. We just could not get the equipment together in time to do the install. We will try again when Ian gets back from vacation.
Away Team CDs
Heather gave a presentation on the Live-CDs that are used for Sci-Fi conventions, including URLs for finding more examples.
New Business
Current Network/Node Status and Monitoring
When I set up the agenda I had expected we would have more nodes up that we could report some interesting status and monitoring information. Maybe next time.
The Possible Next Nodes: Sean Lynch, Crown Plaza, Layer42
These sites are still active and awaiting the first site or two. Another site that might be added to this list is the County EOC. The Santa Clara County EOC has a window that looks directly at the San Jose EOC roof. So they can use a normal roving client node and point the antenna through the window and connect directly to the San Jose EOC roof-mounted Wi-Fi that we will be installing. They have already expressed interest in doing so.
Demo for Red Cross, Joint Venture: Silicon Valley, EMA
As soon as some equipment is mounted on the San Jose EOC roof our first priority is to put together a portable ground station that we can use for demonstration purposes to groups like JV:SV and the Red Cross.
Hardware hardening our sites: power and siesmic
We discussed the importance of this but came to no conclusions yet, other than the need to build off-grid solar-powered structures from the start.
Routing resiliency: redundant/alternate paths (Ricochet?)
We discussed the possibility of doing a Wireless Warrior Weekend to test the real-world capability of the Ricochet modems in hill-top to hill-top line-of-sight conditions. This will be scheduled.
