New Business
Vision Presentation
Caig Anderson gave a presentation on his vision of what SVWUX can become in an effort to ellicit discussion and develop a common direction for SVWUX. (Slides will be posted as soon as I figure out how to do it.
Discussion of proposed changes to meeting format (small)
It was proposed to make a few changes to the meeting format.
- Leverage technology whenever possible (e.g. don't waste meeting time with info that's on the Wiki.)
- Leave a space for small technical "book report" presentations of research papers or new articles.
- Leave space for major technical presentations by individuals or company reps.
- Project Status reports, and
- Project group meetings
Discussion of proposed new Project Path
As part of the vision presentation, a new formalism for developing Projects and Operations was discussed. This somewhat-formal approach to the development of ideas does not apply to raw experimentation, which is still unencumbered. See the slides for more info.
Discussion of new project ideas
A solicitation for new project ideas. Some that were put forward are:
- laser communications,
- developing an easily deployable Internet Kiosk similar to what Heather sets up for Si-Fi conventions (probably just stealing her stuff :-),
- the idea of developing some level of layer 2 routing capability out of the iptables packet inspection and forwarding rules (this explanation may be worded badly :-).
- investigating the details of using IPv6 for the EWN.
Upcomming event: The Villages Tour - Dec 9 @ 10:00
We will be taking a tour of The Villages ham shack on Dec 9 @ 10:00 to check out the site-lines. Also, we will be experimenting with the connectivity of old Ricochet modems between there and Craig's house which is about 10.5 miles away. Mail has been sent to the list with the details.
Existing project Status Reports
EWN Status - We currently have some really great power point slides, some
awsome equipment donated to San Jose RACES group, the bare beginnings of some network policies, and a lot of good ideas. I will be consulting with members on ideas for projects to move the EWN along.
Stratofox Link - We are going to have to almost start over with this project. But good software engineering practice always says "be prepared to throw the first version away".
New Meeting Location
Due to the very noisy conditions at the restaraunt, and the fact that after the meeting we crushed a cockroach on the table, we are looking for a new meeting location for January. Stay tuned. Info will be posted on the Wiki.
