New Business
Los Gatos Repeater work party
We asked for everyone's preferences for scheduling the trip to the Los Gatos repeater site.
- Ian has a schedule conflict with the XPrize Cup (rocket & air show) in New Mexico on Oct 19-22.
- Heather prefers Sundays over Saturdays.
- Tim has a schedule conflict on Sun Oct 22 for an Amateur Radio class and exam.
New equipment at San Jose Emergency Operations Center in the RACES radio room
At the Sept 20 San Jose RACES meeting, Chris brought in a rack with 5 1U Sun Athlon servers to replace 5 early-90's vintage PCs that they were planning to use in the next disaster. Chris only needed to mention what equipment was in the EOC to several companies he has contact with and they insisted that he take that equipment in. We'll need to confirm with Chris exactly which companies to thank for the donations. These are currently owned by sbay.org and will be donated to the City of San Jose as city paperwork progresses.
Monthly Wi-Fi Workshop or Lab Session event
The attendees suggested SVWUX should have an additional recurring event, possibly monthly, to encourage the experimentation side of SVWUX in addition to the emergency services aspects. This Wi-Fi Workshop or Lab Session would be similar to the meetings we held to test and build the Los Gatos repeater equipment. It would be a time people can just bring their Wi-Fi projects and work on them together.
Proposed policy clarifying the purpose of SVWUX
In order to alleviate a concern some members have expressed and clarify
that SVWUX's emergency communications activity should not exclude
experimentation work that the group was founded for, the attendees
proposed the following policy for the SVWUX membership to review and
vote on.
SVWUX's purpose includes but is not limited to the following topics:
- experimentation with wireless networking, including 802.11 wireless ethernet or amateur radio,
- experimentation with software that uses wireless networking,
- construction and maintenance of wireless networking systems in and around Silicon Valley,
- use of wireless networking in emergency communications, preparedness and recovery,
- expanding our members' technical knowledge and practical experience with wireless networking, and
- using our wireless networking skills to benefit the community.
