June 1, 2006 Meeting Minutes

These minutes were recorded and posted by Chris Verges.

Meeting Attendees

Chris Verges, Ian Kluft, Heather Stern, Jim Dennis, T.R. Fullhart, Sabrina Fullhart, Tim Utschig, Craig Anderson, Bill Dale, and Kia Farajiamani.

Old Business

Results of changing the repeater's effective distances

Brian Litzinger was not at the meeting to report on these changes. However, Tim Utschig reported that he was able to associate to the system, and believes the intermittency at his site is related to power lines in the LOS. Additional information on Tim's efforts are posted in the Connection Logs on the SVWUX twiki.

This has been tabled until the next meeting so Brian can give a full report.

New Business

SVWUX Charter

Chris opened the floor for any commentation on the proposed SVWUX charter. There were no major comments, but a few questions and clarifications. Early next week, a vote will be setup on the SBAY servers so SVWUX members can either ratify it or reject it.

Requirements for an emergency communications network

Craig Anderson arrived late at the meeting. He will send a list of requirements to Chris, to be posted on the wiki.

Chris updated the group on the equipment procurement. The rack for San Jose RACES is being built and should be available within the next 2 months. Craig and Chris will try and figure out how to get the rack to the EOC.

Bill Dale raised several questions related to the design of the new SVWUX network. General discussion ensued, but the issue was tabled for the moment. Chris will try and get a basic network concept into a presentation form and send it to the group. This is intended to spur discussion.

Other activities in which SVWUX can participate/contribute

SVWUX has agreed to provide wireless access at the Linux Picnix on August 19, 2006 at the Sunnyvale Baylands Park. Details on how to provide this need to be worked out by the next meeting.

Several amateur radio groups will be participating in a Field Day on June 24 and 25. It was suggested that SVWUX participate by providing data service at two sites (one of which probably being San Jose RACES). If any SVWUX members want to do this, please volunteer on the svwux@svwux.org mailing list. (Chris will be out of town that weekend, and cannot organize that project; we are looking for someone who can do this.)

There is an Electronics Flea Market held at the DeAnza College each month. One of the local Red Cross shelters provides refreshments as a fundraiser. Chris has contacted them to see if they will allow us to setup an SVWUX kiosk site at their refreshment area. This could mean good public exposure for us, and an added service that they can provide to people who come to get refreshments. We are waiting to hear back.

SVWUX IP Address Space

The 44.0.0.0/8 address space has been reserved for Amateur Radio use (AMPRNet). Since part of the new SVWUX network will be used for amateur radio groups (RACES), we are looking into obtaining a subnet. Chris is sending a letter to Douglas Thom, the person assigned to manage the Bay Area's allocated range. T.R. has reported that he was unable to contact Mr. Thom in the past. If Mr. Thom fails to respond within 60 days, we will petition to the AMPRNet manager to take over management of the Bay Area's network range.

We should also look into getting an IPv6 address range assigned to SVWUX. Since this is a new network, deploying IPv6 at the beginning should be more beneficial than attempting to migrate to it later.

As a necessity, we also need to obtain an Autonomous System number for SVWUX.

Anyone know how to do this? smile Seriously, though, we're looking for a volunteer to drive some of this. Please contact Chris if you are interested.

SVWUX Logo

Heather Stern has started to design a logo for SVWUX. Ideas can be found on the LogoIdeas page.
