Setting up a Client
What is a client?
- client (n.)
- 1. The party for which professional services are rendered, as by an attorney.
2. A customer or patron: clients of the hotel.
3. A person using the services of a social services agency.
4. One that depends on the protection of another.
5. A client state.
6. Computer Science. A computer or program that can download files for manipulation, run applications, or request application-based services from a file server.
In the SVWUX network design, a
client is an end node that does not have an alternate means to connect to the Internet. Clients rely on
gateways also connected to the SVWUX network for an Internet connection.
What equipment does a client need?
A client is any device which can associate to an 802.11b/g access point. There are two accepted implementations of a client on the SVWUX network right now: (1) a standard PCMCIA or PCI wireless card and (2) a Linksys WRT54G that has been flashed with
OpenWRT.
What settings does a client need?
Clients should configure their 802.11b/g equipment to associate to an ESSID of
svwux with the proper WEP key enabled. (The WEP key is confidential, so ask
repeater@svwux.org if you need access to the system.) Once associated, the SVWUX system provides each client an IP address via DHCP. (Static IP addresses should be reserved for
gateways when possible.)
Where in the south bay can I access the SVWUX system?
Theoretically, any site in the south bay which can see the SVWUX site can get access.
From trying different locations, we know the following sites work:
We have had problems getting a wireless signal from the following locations:
